In 2005, Kendall and Caroline Buhl were training at Tokyo Joe's Studios of Self Defense under Tashi's Mark Warning and Deb Mahoney.  Kendall, who had achieved his First Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate in 2003, helped teach there.  Tashi Mark had for some time been encouraging Kendall to open his own school.

In the Spring of that year, Kendall helped administer a Tokyo Joe's Black Belt Promotion for the first time.

decide to open a dojo in Salisbury, under the Tokyo Joe's Studios system.  They are accompanied by some fellow students from Tokyo Joe's Ipswich, with the blessing of their teacher, Tashi Mark Warner.

On the evening of September 13, 2005, the Salisbury Board of Selectmen grant Tokyo Joe's a business license.  The first class is held 15 minutes later.

Sensei Darren Sturk accompanied the Buhl's from Ipswich to the new school to serve as a full time instructor.  Also making the move were Brian O'Connor; Evan, Alex and Julia Bradley; Jim, Alex and Laura Gagnon; Lila Edder and Katherine Scott and -- of course -- Autumn and Gareth Buhl
